Lorraine Airport (Aéroport Metz-Nancy-Lorraine, ETZ) in Goin, 44 km (27 miles) north of Nancy (map), is the regional airport with some short-haul flights to destinations within Europe and longer ones to Mediterranean vacation/holiday destinations. TrainThe huge Gare de Metz-Ville, built to the scale of German imperial ambitions when Kaiser Wilhelm II controlled Lorraine, is 1.4 km (0.9 mile) south of the cathedral (map). It serves fast TGV trains on the Paris-to-Luxembourg line, as well as TER Grand Est regional trains serving regional cities such as Nancy, Thionville and Vittel, as well as Luxembourg City, and Saarbrücken and other nearby cities in Germany. There is also TGV train service to the Gare de Lorraine TGV station at Louvigny, 22 km (14 miles) south of Metz (map) and 8 km (5 miles) southwest of Lorraine Airport (ETZ). Fast trains from this station can take you to Paris, and to Bordeaux, Lille, Nantes and Rennes without having to pass through Paris. Intercity BusIsi Lines (Transdev) operates intercity buses to all parts of France and beyond. They connect Metz's Gare Routière (bus station, on the northeast side of the Gare de Metz-Ville train station) with Paris (Gare de Bercy, Gare Routière Gallieni, CDG & Orly Airports) and many other cities throughout Europe. Fares are generally less than the train but the journeys are far longer, (4.5 to 7.5 hours, Paris to Metz) and not as comfortable as the train. Local Public TransportLocal public transportation within the city and region is by LeMet (formerly TCRM: Transports en Commun de la Région Messine). The system is elaborate and extensive. Use the maps, plans and schedules at bus stopsfor guidance. Alas, the websites explaining it are mostly opaque and inscrutable unless you already know the system. MettisMettis is a tram-like bus service with long, comfortable vehicles and priority over other traffic. Two Mettis lines are in service. ArteoSmall shuttle buses (navette) following a route in the city center every 10 minutes (except Sunday): Centre Pompidou-Metz, Square du Luxembourg, Place Saint-Louis and the Préfecture.
