The Ulster Memorial Tower, located just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the Thiepval Memorial (map), stands proudly by the side of the road, visible from a distance. This 21-meter-high (70-foot) tower commemorates the men of Ulster (Northern Ireland) who fought and died during World War I.

The tower is located on the site of the German front line in the 1916 Battle of the Somme. The Schwaben Redoubt was a strongly-protected German position that was eventually taken by the 36th Ulster Division.

A simple monument, the tower's interior room holds a collection of paintings, plaques, and insciptions honoring the men who fought here. Poppy wreaths left by visitors are plentiful in this memorial setting.
