Avignon is a charming walled city on the Rhône River, with a long and colorful history. Every school child has heard of Avignon, though most probably don't know where it is. The chorus goes: Sur le pont d'Avignon Verses describe the handsome men bowing, the lovely ladies curtseying, etc. When you visit Avignon, you'll find that you are singing it to yourself. Be sure to visit the bridge (pont) d'Avignon (official name: Pont St-Bénézet). More... The Pont d'Avignon is a short walk, along the ramparts and through the vineyards from the Palais des Papes. The Palace of the Popes is a large Gothic palace that is filled with treasures and works of art. Next to it is the Rocher des Doms, beautiful gardens overlooking the Rhône. More... Tthe pont and the Palais des Papes are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, acknowledging Avignon's rich historical and cultural history. Wander through Old Avignon, starting from the Hôtel de Ville and its distinctive clock tower, which dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. Your walk will take you by beautiful architecture, lovely open squares (with lots of cafés and restaurants), churches, and a number of museums that you might want to visit. More... Avignon is also known for its summer music festival, started in 1947. The beautiful Opéra-Théatre on the Place de l'Horloge hosts many musical events.
