Bonnieux is one of the larger hilltop towns of the Luberon, with a variety of lodgings and restaurants. It is also a lovely place to wander. But be aware that since it is a hilltop town, you will be wandering up and down a lot, so wear comfortable shoes. Walking through the narrow streets and vaulted passageways of the town, if you keep heading up, you will eventually arrive at the Vieille Église, or old church. Dating from the 12th century, this lovely church served the town for centuries. After years or war and pestilence, much of the town gravitated down from the hilltop, and L' Église Neuve, or new church, was built in the mid 19th century. The Vieille Église includes both Romanesque and later Gothic architectural features, and an 18th-century organ. Although no longer used for worship, the church is the venue for summer concerts, and for a Christmas crèche. As you walk, you'll want to take some rests and enjoy the beautiful views. We enjoyed surveying the fields of lavender for which Provence is so well known. The church stands at an elevation of 429 meters (1,407 feet) and from each side you will enjoy different vistas. Be sure to walk behind the church, through the old cemeteries and beautiful cedar groves, for additional views. As you walk back down to the center of town, you'll see houses from the 16th century and many old walkways. It's a warren of narrow streets that's fun to explore. There are also a couple of terraces where you can continue to enjoy lovely views. Heading a little lower, at 12 rue de la République you'll find the small Musée de la Boulangerie. (Bakery, or Bread, Museum). This is the museum for you if you want to learn about bread and what bakers do. If you can arrange to be in Bonnieux on a Friday, that is market day. There is a smaller market on Wednesdays as well. If you're doing a day trip, you can combine a visit to Bonnieux with one of the other nearby towns, such as Ménerbes or Oppède-le-Vieux.
