Dinard, on the west bank of the wide River Rance across from St-Malo (on the east bank; map), was developed as a resort in the late 1800s, largely by wealthy British and Americans. Many of their Victorian mansions still stand today, visible along the coast. With several large beaches and pleasant climate, Dinard continues to attract holiday makers, particularly from Britain. Each October it hosts a Festival of British Films. Walks along the beach front offer views of Saint-Malo and the Emerald Coast. A large enclosed salt water swimming pool provides a place for swimming, even during low tide when the sea is otherwise far away. At high tide some walkways may be under water, so be sure to check the tides before venturing out. The Casino Barrière, on the waterfront, has slot machines, a variety of games, and a bar with a panoramic view. TransportationDuring the summer season there are frequent ferries between Dinard and St-Malo. Outside of summer, service may be sporadic. Check with the Tourist Information Office about specific sailings. You can see St-Malo and its ramparts from Dinard: The Dinard Airport (Aéroport de Dinard Pleurtuit Saint-Malo; DNR), 4 km (2.5 miles) south of the center of Dinard, serves the town and St-Malo with convenient flights from Great Britain.
