France Travel Planner by Tom Brosnahan & Jane Fisher   Corte, Corsica Guide
Want to get away from the crowds? Head for the hills! The Corsican mountains, to be exact. Corte is in the midst of them: beautiful, historic, quiet, serene, a good break from the busy seaside.

Deep in the mountains of northern Corsica, Corte is a typical mountain town: off the beaten track, friendly, quiet, inexpensive, a bit rustic rather than polished.

Visitors come to get away from the crowds, to enjoy the mountainous natural beauty, and to hike in the mountains.

You can start with a walk around this historic town, the Parcours Patrimonial, a self-guided walking tour of more than a dozen historic and cultural sites in the town.

Transport

Although the roads are good, the 70-km (44-mile) drive from Bastia to Corte takes over an hour—you're driving in the mountains.

Trains of the Chemins de fer de la Corse travel daily between Ajaccio and Ponte Leccia, stopping at Corte. At Ponte Leccia the line divides, with some trains headed for Île-Rousse and Calvi, and others going to Casamozza and Bastia.

Corte has a small aérodrome for small private planes, but the nearest major airports are Ajaccio, Calvi and Bastia.

Where to Stay

Being a mountain town off the beaten track, Corte's selection of hotels is smaller than the seaside resorts, but you will still find a suitable place to stay:
