France Travel Planner by Tom Brosnahan & Jane Fisher   L'Abri de Cap-Blanc, Les Eyzies, France
This small shelter protects amazing relief sculptures of horses.

L'Abri de Cap-Blanc is just 9 kilometers (about 6 miles) northeast of Les Eyzies. It is a small site, and like many of the prehistoric sites in the area, you must make a reservation in advance. You get more information at the Font de Gaume ticket office.

Although it is a small site, just one "abri,"or shelter about 15 meters (50 feet) long, it is most impressive. Almost the entire wall is covered in high relief carvings, mostly of horses, with a background of bison and deer. Dating from about 15,000 BC, these carvings have been well preserved because of the natural overhang of the cliff.

At first glance it looks very nice. As you continue to look at it, and to listen to the guide's explanation, you begin to appreciate the majesty and strength of these works of art. As light moves across the horses, some appear to move. Although today it's a flashlight making this magic, in ancient times the changing light during the day would have had the same effect. Some of the horses are two meters long (just over 6 feet), and they are majestic and awe-inspiring.

One of several large relief carvings of horses, L'Abri de Cap Blanc.

L'Abri de Cap Blanc is not a major site and will never get the same attention as the famous site of Lascaux. But it is unique and beautiful, and if your schedule permits it is well worth a visit.

Allow time to walk down a wooded path to the small building that houses a museum and offices. From here you will go into the Abri with a guide, who will explain the carvings and allow you time to view and absorb them.

You may also want to visit the Grotte de Font-de-Gaume and the Grotte des Combarelles, both near Les Eyzies. The Abri du Poisson contains a sculpture of a salmon that is estimated to be 25,000 years old. If you're interested in prehistory, this is the place to be!
