France Travel Planner by Tom Brosnahan & Jane Fisher   Restaurants in Aix-en-Provence
Aix's Mediterranean climate encourages everyone to sip and dine en plein aire in the afternoon and evening.

Aix-en-Provence is a popular place for American—and other international—university students, and it also attracts large numbers of tourists from around the world. And the town offers a variety of cafes and restaurants to serve the appetites of its diverse visitors.

The Cours Mirabeau is lined with restaurants, some close to the Rotonde and others extending he length of the avenue.

An interesting—and bustling—restaurant area is the Place Richelme (map), in front of the large La Poste. Richeleme is the site of an open air food market every morning. At lunchtime, all of the market goes away and chairs and tables fill the area, which is surrounded by restaurants. These are mostly informal cafés with reasonably priced meals.

other nearby restaurants are busy serving hungry diners.

Just north of La Poste is the Hôtel de Ville and the Place et Fontaine de la Mairie, another popular café spot.

To the north and west of the Hôtel de Ville is the long Place des Cardeurs, where one restaurant or cafe leads to the next and there is plenty of outdoor seating. This area is particularly popular in the evening.

There are also many restaurants throughout the tiny streets of the old town of Aix. Wander around and you'll find many choices. Some of the best restaurants tend to be on small non-descript streets.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Mickaël Féval, a Michelin one-star restaurant tucked away on a tiny street. The four-courses (plus an amuse-bouche and some tiny pastries) included a delicious bar tartare (sea bass), with zucchini, quinoa, and passion fruit; pan-fried foie gras with rhubarb and tarragon; roast veal with delicate vegetables; and an updated Black Forest Cake. All excellent! More...

Another evening we wandered through the narrow streets, reading menus and looking for something appealing and found the small Licandro Le Bistrot. Seated in a small basement room, we enjoyed a three-course dinner for 32€. It included puff pastry with sardines and tomatoes; sea bass or rabbit for the main course; and cherry clafouti for dessert. Another very pleasant dinner. More...

You'll find plenty of variety, in all price ranges, in the restaurants of Aix-en-Provence!
