France Travel Planner by Tom Brosnahan & Jane Fisher   Eguisheim, Alsace, France Guide
Eguisheim is an extraordinarily well-preserved and picturesque medieval wine-making village at the edge of the Vosges mountains bordering the broad, fertile plain of the Rhine near Colmar. You won't believe how pretty it is!

Eguisheim, 7.2 km (4.5 miles) southwest of Colmar (map), is a pretty and historic wine-making village in the Haut-Rhin valley of Alsace.

Wines produced in and around Eguisheim are some of the best in Alsace, but besides the fine wine, visitors are drawn to one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages in France").

Just to stroll Eguisheim's stone-paved medieval streets of half-timbered cottages is a delight, with their rustic construction carefully preserved, their flower boxes full of splashes of floral color.

Eguisheim is much older than medieval times, however, as suggested by its circular outline on a map and the rue du Rempart which follows the track of the ancient city walls (now mostly gone).

The Romans built the first fortress here, and began the cultivation of wine. Among its grand cru wines are those of eichberg and pfersigberg.

The place Saint-Léon (or place du Château d'Eguisheim) is the village center, with its fountain, statue of Pope Leo IX (Saint-Léon, an Eguisheim native), the chapelle Saint-Léon IX (1894) and the Église Saint-Pierre et Saint Paul founded in 1220 but heavily rebuilt in 1809.

Transport from Colmar

Fluo Grand Est Bus 208 (Colmar - Husseren - Obermorschwihr) or Bus 440 (Colmar - Guebwiller) will take youfrom the Trace Théâtre bus stop in Colmar to Eguisheim in about 30 minutes, but there are only a few buses per day, and none on Sunday.

You can take Bus 7 from the Champ-de-Mars stop southwest to Wettolsheim-Ricoh, the last stop on the route, then walk 2.25 km (1.4 miles) southwest to the center of Eguisheim, though it's not a particularly pleasant walk until you get into the village.
