The Orangerie is the oldest and largest park in Strasbourg. Located in the European District to the north of the city center, it is easily reached by Tram to the Droits de l'Homme stop, or by city buses. The Parc de l'Orangerie dates from the middle of the 18th century, expanded into an English-style park in the 19th century. It has lovely mature trees, a lake, a small zoo, and a mini farm for children. It's a favorite gathering spot for Strasbourg families, particularly on the weekends. The "Josephine Pavilion" was dedicated to Empress Josephine in 1806, although she apparently never visited. This building is used for a variety of functions today, and it's not uncommon to see storks nesting on its chimneys. In fact, the Orangerie is host to the Centre de Reproduction, de Repopulation et d'Hivernage de la Cigogne Blanche d'Alsace. Or, Center of reproduction, repopulating, and wintering of the Alsatian white stork. Storks have long been a symbol of Alsace. Their populations were threatened in the 20th century, but programs such as this have brought them back. More... Having seen storks from a distance on chimney tops and in trees, it was fascinating to see them up close. And the small zoo allows children to come face to face with a variety of small animals, from baboons to goats to birds. There are many walking/cycling paths and lots of broad green areas for picnics and relaxation, as well as playgrounds and park areas for recreation. If you want a change of pace from seeing all the fascinating sights of Strasbourg, head to l'Orangerie and join the Strasbourgeois.
