Beaune is a small city that has quite a few restaurants, providing you many opportunities to sample traditional Burgundian fare and other fine cuisine. The Place Carnot, in the center of town (map), is encircled with restaurants. Most of these are reasonably priced and serve traditional dishes incuding Escargots de Bourgogne (snails with a lot of butter and garlic), Boeuf Bourguignon, and Oeufs en Meurette (eggs poached in red wine). And of course you have ample opportunity to sample the wines of the region. You might also want to enjoy a Kir, an apéritif of white wine and crème de cassis, a specialty of Dijon and Burgundy. Order a Kir Royal and it will be made with Champagne. If you want a meal that is a bit more refined and unusual, try the P'tit Paradis, at 25 Rue Paradis (map), just across the street from the Musée du Vin. Creative cooking and fine service characterize this small place, and you'll want to reserve in advance as seating is limited. It's the only place I've ever eaten bacon-infused whipped cream...(serve with grilled cod and lentils). We had a wonderful dinner there in 2013, and returned in 2024 for an equally delicious lunch! If you really want to celebrate, try one of the several Michelin one-star restaurants in Beaune. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Le Bénaton, 25 Faubourg Bretonnière, on the outskirts of town just next to the Moutarderie Fallot (map). Fine ingredients and beautiful preparation made this a memorable meal. (By the way, we wondered about the name and later learned that bénaton is the word for the traditional basket used by grape pickers. Very appropriate for Beaune.) Beaune is also home to quite a number of boulangeries/pâtisseries where you can stock up on bread, croissants, sandwiches, quiches, and other snacks and picnic foods. And on Saturdays, you can find all sorts of delicious things at the Beaune market. If you're planning to drive on the Route des Grands Crus to visit some vineyards, or take another excursion in Burgundy, you might want to pack a picnic lunch.
