France Travel Planner by Tom Brosnahan & Jane Fisher   What to See & Do in Épernay, France
In Épernay, it's all about the Champagne!

Épernay is a small town of about 25,000 people, on the Marne River in the Champagne region of France (map).

Its main street is the Avenue de Champagne. One of its main squares is the Place de Champagne. Street names include Möet, Chandon, and Mercier. Get the picture?

The Avenue de Champagne is home to many of the big name champagne producers, including Möet et Chandon, Perrier Jouet, Pol Roger, and Mercier. You'll also find other smaller labels, many of which are not exported from France.

Underneath the Avenue de Champagne are more than 100 kilometers of tunnels that make up the caves where millions of bottles of champagne age.

The Office de Tourisme can provide a list of which houses are open for visits, as well as their hours and prices. Prices include a tasting at the end of the tour.

Other sights in Épernay include the beautiful Hôtel de Ville (which you'll see if you go to the Tourist Office). Formerly home to M Auban-Möet, it is gracious and surrounded by gardens, a park, and and a war memorial.

Épernay's main shopping area is in the streets that run off the Place de la République (map); you'll also find many restaurants in this area. The nearby Place Hugues Plomb has the remains of the Portail St-Martin, a stone archway dating from the 16th century.

Closer to the train station, at the Place Mendès France, are the century-old Italinate theater and the Church of Notre-Dame, dating from the earily 1900s but done in 12th century style and including 16th century stained glass.

Like many towns in the area, Épernay suffered great damage in both World War I and World War II. A few remnants from the 16th century remain, including the home of Louise de Savoie (mother of King François I).

Épernay also has its own tourist train, known appropriately as the Mill'Bulles, or Thousand Bubbles. This runs in the summer months and provides information on the history of Épernay.
