France Travel Planner by Tom Brosnahan & Jane Fisher   Transport for Champagne-Ardenne

Fast TGV trains from Paris whisk you to Reims in as little as 45 minutes, so you can easily visit Reims in a day and return to your Paris hotel in the evening. If you want to stay overnight, Reims makes the best base, with the most frequent transportation, and the greatest number and variety of hotels.

With good planning and an early start, you can ride the TGV to Reims, visit the city, take a train to Épernay, see the sights there, and return to Paris in the evening, having seen both of the Champagne region's most famous towns, although this would be a long day and you must plan the transport links carefully in advance.

Except on Sunday, there are frequent TER regional trains between Reims and Épernay. We stayed in Reims and did a day trip to Épernay, which worked out well.

Trains from Paris

Reims is on the TGV fast intercity and TER regional train lines between Paris and Strasbourg, so there's daily service.

At least four fast TGV trains and TER regional trains per day speed between Paris's Gare de l'Est and the Gare de Reims (Centre) SNCF (map) in 45 minutes to an hour. More...

Some TGV trains from Paris arrive at the Gare de Reims (Centre), others (and Ouigo trains) serve the Gare de Champagne-Ardenne TGV, 8 km (5 miles) southwest of the Gare de Reims by the A4/E17/E46/E50 highway (map).

Buses from Paris

Many buses make the journey from Paris's Gare de Bercy to the Gare de Champagne-Ardenne TGV, 8 km (5 miles) southwest of Reims city center. The journey by bus between the two cities costs much less than by train, but takes two to 2-1/2 hours each way.

By Car from Paris

The drive between Paris and Reims takes less than two hours along the A4 autoroute (expressway)(map).

By Car in the Region

If you want to explore the Route touristique du Champagne, which goes through a variety of small villages and lots of vineyards, you will want to have a car. You'll also need a car if you want to visit champagne houses outside of Reims or Épernay.

Regional Transportation

Frequent TER Champagne-Ardenne regional trains connect Gare de Reims-Maison Blanche with Épernay.
