Train

Montpellier has two train stations (map). TGV INOUI trains to and from Paris - Gare de Lyon (about 3-1/2 hours) use both stations:

Gare Montpellier Saint-Roch

In the city center only 500 meters (3/10 mile, less than 10-minute walk) south of the Place de la Comédie, the Gare Saint-Roch is Montpellier's most convenient station.

Gare Saint-Roch, easily reached by tram.

Gare Montpellier - Sud de France

The larger, modern Gare Montpellier - Sud de France is 6 km (3.7 miles) southeast of the Gare Saint-Roch just off the A9 autoroute.

A shuttle bus (navette) connects the Gare de Montpellier - Sud de France with the Place de France (map), where you can board a Line 1 tram for the journey to the Gare Saint-Roch and/or the Place de la Comédie. Plan 50 minutes for the entire journey between the Gare Montpellier - Sud de France and the Place de la Comédie.

Taxis meet most train arrivals. If there are not enough cabs to carry all the passengers, drivers will radio for others to come.

Plane

The Aéroport Montpellier-Méditerranée (MPL), 9 km (5.6 miles) southeast of the Place de la Comédie on the Mediterranean coast (map), serves intra-European and some north African destinations by Air France, EasyJet, Luxair, Royal Air Maroc, Transavia, Volotea and other lines.

Taxi

The taxi company named AT2M (tel: +33 (0)4 30 96 60 00) specializes in rides to and from the airport. More...

Shuttle & Tram

The airport can be reached by the Line 3 tram and the Montpellier Airport Shuttle, Line 620 operated by Hérault Transport. Shuttles run every 30 minutes from 08:00 (8 am) to 20:00 (8 pm), with some hourly shuttles before and after that time. The shuttle stops at the Gare Montpellier - Sud de France and terminates at the Place de l'Europe (map), from which you can take trams on Lines 1, 2 or 4 to reach the city center.

Plans are under way to connect the airport and city center directly by tram.

Public Transport

Public transport in Montpellier and its region is operated by TaM (Transports de l'agglomération de Montpellier), including trams, city buses, car parking, and shared bikes and cars. More...

Tram

Montpellier has four numbered tram lines, with a fifth in the works. All lines converge at the Gare Saint-Roch, with the Place de la Comédie and the Garcia Lorca station being other major junctions.

Line 4 goes all the way around the historic center in both directions: Tram 4a goes clockwise, Tram 4b goes counter (anti-) clockwise. It's a useful way to save on walking among the sites in the city center.

One fare ticket costs 1.60. A carnet of 10 costs 10—a considerable saving. Buy your tickets from machines right at the tram stops, paying with coins, notes, cards or your smartphone (Apple Pay, etc.)

Bus

Buses are useful to reach outlying areas away from the historic center.

Shuttle (Navette)

A shuttle bus (navette) connects the Gare de Montpellier - Sud de France with the Place de France (map), where you can board a Line 1 tram for the journey to the Gare Saint-Roch and/or the Place de la Comédie. Plan 50 minutes for the entire journey between the Gare Montpellier - Sud de France and the Place de la Comédie, although it may take less time.

Bicycle

TaM also operates the city's shared-bike program, named Vélomagg. You'll see bike stands at major transport connection points.

Regional

Going farther in the region from Montpellier, perhaps to the seacoast (Aigues-Mortes, Agde, Sète, etc)? Public buses are operated by Hérault Transport. More...
