Nearly 200 distilleries in the Cognac region produce its namesake beverage, but more than 90% is produced and sold by the Four Giants: Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell and Rémy Martin, whose products are available worldwide. Part of the enjoyment of touring Cognac is to sample the products of the smaller producers, tastes you won't find at home. The big cognac companies blend their products to achieve certain uniform characters and consistencies. The tastes among local producers vary more, even to unblended (single-crop "vintage") drinks.
