Trains

The Gare de Cognac SNCF, 1 km (6/10 mile) south of the city center (map) serves regional TER trains, but not the fast TGV trains. or SNCF Intercités. For those you must use the Gare d'Angoulême SNCF, 46 km (29 miles) east of Cognac (map), then take a regional TER train to Cognac.

SNCF Intercités trains travel between Paris and Saintes, from which you take a TER train to Cognac.

TGV trains cover the distance between Paris and Angoulême in less than 3 hours. TER trains travel from Angoulême to Cognac in about 39 minutes, for a total travel time of 3.5 to 4.5 hours between Paris and Cognac, depending on connections. Over half of the 15 TER trains per day travel from Angoulême to Cognac in the evening.

Day-Trip to Cognac

You can ride the train from Paris or Bordeaux to Cognac, stop for a visit to a cognac distillery, then continue to your next destination by train, but be sure to check the connection time at Angoulême or Saintes: with few midday trains, the normal Bordeaux-to-Cognac trip of less than two hours may take nearly twice as long with a lengthy connection time.

Also check the hours of operation for the tours and museums you will visit to be sure they will be open. Many organizations close for lunch between 12:00 noon and 13:30 (1:30pm) or 14:00 (2:00pm).

City Buses

Cognac's city bus network is operated by Transcom. Although you can walk to most everything you may want to see and do in Cognac, you might want to ride the Ligne A bus (Direction: rue du Lycée) or Ligne D (Direction: Piscine) from the Gare de Cognac SNCF train station to the city center at Place François Ier, or Ligne B (Direction: ZAC Monplaisir) from the Gare to Place François Ier and the Château de Cognac (Cognac Otard).
