Rue Mouffetard, in the 5th arrondissement near the Métro at Place Monge, is a bustling market street, part of which is pedestrian only. You'll find all sorts of produce, fish, meat, and cheese, as well as shops selling olive oil, wine, and other things to complete your meal. In addition there are many reasonably priced restaurants on Rue Mouffetard itself and in the area. The Place de la Contrescarpe at the top of Mouffetard has several nice cafés surrounding a small square with a fountain and trees. Ernest Hemingway once lived in this area and may have sat in the same café. The colorfully named Rue du Pot de Fer (Iron Pot Street), about halfway down Rue Mouffetard, seems to consist of nothing but restaurants. Enjoy a nice lunch (lunch menus are cheaper than dinner) and pick up some food for the evening. You can get a three-course lunch at any of these restaurants for 10-15 euros (wine and coffee in addition). They also offer higher-priced options, but if you want a good inexpensive meal, start here. An avocado salad to start the meal... Followed by lamb chops (served with potatoes and vegetables), and chocolate mousse for dessert. With wine and coffee, a reasonable 20 euros. After your meal, be sure to stop at some of the wonderful shops and stands that make up the Mouffetard Market. On Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, you can also check out the open-air market at nearby Place Monge. Market streets generally have a great selection of restaurants. You might also want to try the Rue Cler area, The Rue de Buci area, or the Rue Montorgueil area for other interesting and reasonably priced restaurants. Rue Mouffetard is also not too far from the Place St-Michel and the many inexpensive restaurants in that area.
