Versailles is home to one of the best food markets in the Paris area. As the only market for this upscale town, it is high quality and active.

The Marché Notre-Dame in Versailles, has served the needs of the population of the town of Versailles since the time of Louis XIV. A wonderful covered market, built in 1841, anchors the market place. Four buildings, filled with food of all types, provide sensory overload and tempt you with many delicious offerings. As if that weren't enough, on Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings an open-air market fills the center of the market square, bringing more wonderful produce, cheese, meats, fish, and more. You can even get French snails, or escargots, stuffed with garlic and parsley butter and ready to be baked and served! I've visited a lot of markets in Paris, and I have to say that this one blew me away. Everything looked wonderful! Ladies with wheeled shopping carts inspected the fruits and vegetables, while the fish merchants sang out their offerings. Discerning shoppers eyed the produce and chose only the best. Although we were tempted to buy lots and have a huge picnic, rainy weather and inertia combined to send us for a wonderful lunch at Le Boeuf à la Mode, one of the many excellent restaurants surrounding the market square. A couple blocks away is the small but wonderful flower market, or Marché aux Fleurs, with its beautiful offerings. Versailles is definitely a place to go for good food and a colorful market experience!
