Paris has four large youth hostels (auberge de jeunesse) affiliated with Hostelling International(HI) and its French counterpart, the Fédération unie des auberges de jeunesse (FUAJ). These hostels all offer Internet access, TV lounges, laundry and self-catering kitchen facilities, luggage storage rooms, private lockers, non-smoking areas, café-bars, and the price includes bed linens and continental breakfast. They're open 24 hours a day, though the bedrooms may be closed for a few hours each afternoon. Here are the hostels, in order of convenience to the center of Paris: 1. Auberge "Jules Ferry"8 Boulevard Jules Ferry (map) With 99 beds in 4-, 5-, 6- and larger bed dorms, this relatively small hostel is in a very convenient location near Place de la République (map) and its huge Métro station serving five Métro lines (3, 5, 8, 9 and 11) and six bus lines, meaning that you can get virtually anywhere in Paris quickly and easily, with fewer line changes. This hostel fills early, so reserve well in advance for the summer. 2. Auberge "Le d'Artagnan"80 rue Vitruve (map) This is the largest youth hostel in France with 412 beds in rooms of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and more beds. It's located to the east of the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery (map), 5 km (3 miles) east of the center of Paris (Notre Dame), but it's only one Métro stop away from the Eurolines bus terminal. It's a bit easier to find a bed here because the hostel is so large. From the Porte de Bagnolet Métro station, walk south on Boulevard Davout one long block to the first street on the right, which is Rue Vitruve (map). 3. Auberge "Cité des Sciences"24 rue des Sept Arpents (map) This smallish hostel (185 beds in rooms of 4, 5, 6 and more beds), 6.2 km (4 miles) northeast of Notre Dame, is near Parc de la Villette and Parc des Buttes Chaumont on the northeastern edge of Paris. It features a shady garden, a children's playground, and a bicycle shop right at the hostel. 4. Auberge "Léo Lagrange"107 rue Martre (map) Located in the northeastern suburb of Clichy (map), 7.4 km (4.6 miles) northwest of Notre Dame, this large hostel has 329 beds in rooms of 2, 3, 4 and 5 beds, plus all the customary services. It's very near the Mairie de Clichy Métro station on Line 13, which can speed you south directly to the Métro stations of Gare St-Lazare, Champs-Élysées Clemenceau (Grand Palais & Petit Palais), Invalides, Varenne (Hôtel des Invalides/ Napoleon's Tomb, Musée Rodin), Montparnasse-Bienvenüe (Gare Montparnasse, Tour Montparnasse) and Gaîté (theaters and restaurants).
